  • This month, our Elephant Research Program Manager Ave Owen presented their master’s research in Thai at Kasetsart University’s 43rd Annual Thailand Wildlife Seminar!

Their research, “The Role of Alternative Crop Cultivation in Promoting Human-Elephant Coexistence: A Multidisciplinary Investigation in Thailand,” revealed key findings: elephants destroyed over 80% of the pineapple but less than 6% of any alternative crop species across all test plots. This highlights the potential of alternative crops as a sustainable human-elephant coexistence strategy.

Congratulations @ave_withelephants and many thanks to our partners—Miami University’s Project Dragonfly, the Conservation Ecology Program (CEG KMUTT), and Kasetsart University—for their collaboration and support in advancing this important research.

  • 🐘Ever wondered how elephants react when tourists visit or when we work to conserve them?

Research led by PhD Candidate Brooke Friswold of
KMUTT uncovers these fascinating insights in her long-term study at Kuiburi National Park.

Brooke, our team, and Kui Buri National Park rangers are studying how elephants respond to different conservation strategies, from park closures to creating safe spaces and improving their habitat.

By understanding how wild elephants adapt to our conservation efforts, we can better protect both elephants and local communities.

Stay tuned as we discover more about Thailand’s wild elephants! Brooke is set to complete her PhD next year; we can’t wait to see the fantastic results of this work!
